Garland Teacher's Aide Facing Sex Crime Charges
Dennis Connor, a 27-year-old teacher's aide at Naaman Forest High School, in Garland, Texas, was recently arrested and charged with the sexual assault of a 15-year-old student. He is now facing separate charges for allegedly engaging in an improper relationship between an educator and a student. Specifically, prosecutors contend that Connor was involved in a "sexting" relationship with another minor student.
Under Texas law (See Texas Penal Code Title 5, Section 21.12), an improper relationship between an educator and a student is a second-degree felony, punishable by no more than 20 years or no less than 2 years in prison.
The sexual assault of a child charges are from late January of this year. According to court documents, Connor began a flirtatious relationship with the victim, calling her beautiful while passing her in the school hallways and exchanging text messages with her. The incident in question occurred when Connor allegedly removed the victim from class and forced himself upon her in a school office. The victim informed the police that she did not come forward out fear because Connor had threatened her with harm in the event she told anyone.
The separate "sexting" charges involve a different female student who came forward after Connor's arrest on Monday. Prosecutors allege that he exchanged both messages and pictures with the student.
Conner was originally hired by the school district in August 2009. He passed a background check and worked with special education students. However, none of the students involved were special education students. He is currently on paid administrative leave. Bail was posted at $25,000.
