Dallas Drug Arrests: Officials Seize Firearms and $1 Million Cash
This past Saturday, officials from a multitude of law enforcement agencies - the Texas Department of Public Safety, Dallas County Sheriff's Department, Collin County Sheriff's Department, Wylie Police Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) - joined forces to arrest five men from the Dallas-area on weapons and drug charges.
According to accounts given by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) at a Tuesday press conference, arrests were made at two separate locations - one in Collin County and the other in southern Dallas - after an investigation of only two weeks.
Inside the two locations, law enforcement officials found nearly $1 million in cash divided into piles of $5,000 and placed inside vacuum-sealed bags, as well as multiple firearms.
It is believed that the five suspects were planning to take the $1 million to Arizona to purchase a large quantity of marijuana and that the guns were likely to be delivered into Mexico shortly after their arrival in Arizona.
"Typically with an operation of this scale, we would have investigated a lot longer," said Captain Jeoff Williams of the criminal investigation unit of the DPS. "But given the fact there were a lot of weapons involved and those were to be delivered to Arizona and sent on to Mexico to be used in the drug wars, we acted."
The five men arrested in the weapon and drug bust are expected to be arraigned Thursday at the federal courthouse in Plano on charges of conspiracy to distribute marijuana, weapons possession and money laundering. Meanwhile, the investigation is continuing and more arrests are expected.
According to Jack Webster, the regional commander for the Dallas DPS, these types of cases are becoming increasingly common in the Dallas area.
"Dallas is becoming a large player in this," said Webster. "The drug trade is setting up shop here more and more."
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty. Stay tuned for further developments from our Dallas criminal defense blog ...
